Piciformes include woodpeckers and other related birds. Many are insectivorous, although some, such as the toucan, primarily eat fruit. Size varies between 9 - 60 cm. Nearly all Piciformes have zygodactyl feet, meaning that they have 2 toes pointing forward and 2 toes pointing backward. Another notable fact is that they have true feathers for all of their lives (i.e they aren’t born with down feathers). Young birds in this order are altricial, meaning that they are entirely dependent on the parents for food and care.
